After North Korean soldiers crossed the border, South Korea fired warning shots.

It was emphasized that the incident that occurred in the eastern part of the demilitarized zone could have happened 'accidentally.' According to Seoul government officials, the South Korean army fired warning shots at a group of North Korean soldiers who crossed the border on Tuesday. It has been nearly a year since the last report of North Korean soldiers violating the heavily fortified border line between the two countries. In a statement from the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff, it was noted that about 10 North Korean soldiers, some of whom were armed, crossed the border at 5:00 PM on Tuesday in the eastern part of the demilitarized zone (DMZ). The statement indicated that the group returned to North Korea after South Korea fired warning shots. The area, which is 248 kilometers long and 4 kilometers wide, is a legacy of the 1950-1953 Korean War and is estimated to contain 2 million landmines, making it one of the most dangerous border strips in the world. The reason why North Korean troops crossed the border remains unclear. However, reports in South Korean media suggested that the North Korean soldiers may have crossed the border "unintentionally" during a patrol. In October, Pyongyang announced that it would strengthen its defensive capabilities along the border line. A statement made by the South Korean army at the end of March mentioned that North Korea was working on "various missions," such as reinforcing the border strip surrounded by barbed wire. The violation on Tuesday occurred after several similar incidents in June of last year. At that time, Seoul had stated that the violations were not intentional and emphasized that the indicator signs in the area where the violation occurred were not clearly visible. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un continues to boast about his country's nuclear capabilities, while sending thousands of troops to Ukraine to support Russia is escalating tensions between the two neighboring countries.
